Need For Speed: Undercover is the latest Need For Speed game by EA, overall, this game is brilliant if you like the Need For Speed games, or any sort of car-racing game, there are plenty of police-chases, you can join races with a press of a button and unlike some of the previous games, it’s not too long before you have a cool-car! The only problem I had with the game was I didn’t mind the story very exciting, but the game play is brilliant never the less!
In Need For Speed: Undercover, believe it or not, you play the role of a undercover police officer, your job is to take down a group of street racers, these street racers and are somehow involved with a international smuggling ring.
Although the story is played in very cool cut scenes, which is what a lot of other gamers also loved about the previous need for speed: most wanted, the story long has a extremely predictable plot.
As in most of the Need For Speed games, you will do all the racing on the streets of a city, in this game, it’s the tri-city bay area. You start, as normal, with a bad car, although it works, it’s not very fast and like in all the other games, as you progress though the game, you earn money, unlock new cars and can buy upgrades for your car.
Another great thing about this game is that it encourages you to drive with a style, for example drag-racing, drifting around corners/objects and drive unbelievably close to other cars without crashing! You’ve also got some new upgrades, such as the J-Turn mechanic, which allows you to spin the car 180 degrees extremely quickly while going at a fast speed, which is vital when getting away from the police!
Having said that, the police are back in this game, but welcomed by myself and a number of other gamers who I’ve spoken to about the game, we’ve all found that the challenges where you have to ram/take out a number of police cars is great fun! So far the challenges where you must do a certain amount of damage to an area and just cause havoc!
Need For Speed: Undercover isn’t a game where you just race, there are many levels where you need to maintain a lead for a amount of time, or gain a certain distance ahead of your rivals, heck, sometimes you even need to get away from the police while your in a stolen car, but trying to keep the car in mint condition!
The police force has improved a lot from the past-games, the police are now able to laying down spikes and other real-life police tactics, although you can go the whole game without ever running into a police officer laying spikes on the floor.
The only problem with the game play I noticed on the PS3 is the poor frame-rate, which is sometimes slow which causes problems while playing this game, but it’s not too bad and usually it doesn’t effect your playing too much.
