Sony stated not too long ago that it had achieved approximately 17 million Playstation Network (PSN) users. This number came as a shock to many people seeing as the numbers were pretty close to those of Xbox Live users. Therefore good ‘ol MTV went to investigate. They found where the number came from–most things Sony-related. Sony clarified that the numbers included those who created profiles on the PS3, PSP, and the Sony forums. They also further identified that multiple accounts were probable for single users.
This number game isn’t just used by Sony; companies do this all the time. In the interest of sounding bigger and better to their shareholders and the public, companies will often times give out large numbers or statistics but not talk about where those numbers come from. When looking at reports always make sure to look at where the data is coming from, most people don’t look to see if it is a reliable source. So when looking for reliable gaming news, make sure to read the fine print.
