Nintendo is preparing to launch a channel in Japan that could rival traditional broadcast television.  With Japan’s largest advertising agency, Dentsu, producing exclusive content and selling advertising, the channel will launch in Spring of ’09.

While XBOX360 owners can already enjoy movies and TV series, Nintendo plans to take the next logical progression and create a roster of family-oriented programming designed to directly compete with Fuji television.  As Japan’s largest commercial broadcaster, even they admit that if Nintendo’s bid for the living room is successful it would be a “nightmare” for the TV industry.

As the gaming industry continues to grow in revenue it will expand into every area of society.  It is already available on your phone, on your computer, and your TV.  Every instance is a chance to sell advertising and companies are finally realizing the full extent of that exposure.  In Japan, Nintendo is a much more household name and always has been.  With the way Japan embraces technology and connectivity, the Wii could very well serve as the main entertainment center in the house.  This, of course, would be dependent on the quality of content produced and marketed.
