When I was asked to review DUOtrix, a recently released Xbox Live Community game (400 MS Points), I was excited because it would be my first experience with the new service. This is a great puzzle game that incorporates many mechanics you are completely familiar with and others that will totally blow your mind. DUOtrix’s graphics are mind-melting, in the best way possible. As you line up clusters of three blocks, your combo builds larger and the colors explode into a gorgeous array of colors.
The game consists of three modes: Classic, which keeps the power-ups out, an Arcade mode, which adds those power ups which are taken out of the classic mode and finally a Puzzle mode, which forces you to clear the top and bottom screens to move on. These modes are completely different and bring variety to the overall gameplay. The best way I can describe the game is, a new take on the classic Lumines or Tetris puzzles and adds a totally new, second dimension. Along with the already mind taxing gameplay of the two puzzle areas, you can also hit the A button to switch the colors to the other screen. This is what makes DUOtrix absolutely a must download. As the blocks build up, the insanity grows and grows keeping my mind moving at a high-speed.
The other elements that make this game so enjoyable are the Zoots, which are the games version of achievements. This, of course, taps into my forced completionism that drives all of us to finish a game fully. All I can say about these is that they are tough and take a ton of time to completed. At this point I only have a couple, but I will continue on to finish them. The music has a very underground techno feel that adds to the overall minimalism that the game strives for and succeeds in developing over the course of a round. DUOtrix is a great puzzle game, period! Any gamer who wants a challenging, trippy, cheap community game should at the very least download the demo. For those willing to give it a try will be pleasantly surprised in the quality and overall polish given to this Xbox Community Game.
