The MMORPG market is most notably dominated by one game, World of Warcraft. Needless to say many were skeptical when a new MMORPG decides to try its had at grabbing some of the subscriber base. When Age of Conan came out a lot of people were excited for a new game with a much more mature theme. Not only was there lots of blood, gore, and decapitations, but if one were so inclined they could go around topless as either a male or a female. However, it seems that not all would be good with this game. CFO Olav Sandnes resigned after fourth quarter reports came out stating $23.3 million loss. Age of Conan has already closed 31 of its 48 servers a while ago which signaled the poor performance of this MMO. Many factors could be attributed to the failure of this game. High computer specs, launching too early, and having a poor game after level 20, were all major problems that might have harmed this game.
It is always sad to see things like this happen. The MMO market is a very volatile one, and many games have learned that the hard way. Age of Conan is just one of many games that released without a finished product, resulting in the desolate servers that make up the game as of now. Hopefully other MMOs can learn from the failures of Age of Conan so that they don’t repeat the same mistakes.
