What a year 2008 was for video games. I’m sure you were all just dying to know what the best selling games on the Japanese islands were. Fret no longer for Famitsu comes to the rescue with Japanese sales numbers. The top ten were:
1. Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G
2. Pokemon Platinum
3. Wii Fit
4. Mario Kart Wii
5. Dairantou Smash Brothers X
6. Rhythm Tengoku Gold DS
7. Dragon Quest V: Tenkuu No Hanayome
8. Animal Crossing: City Folk
9. Hoshi no Kirby: Ultra Super Deluxe
10. Wii Sports
If you recall the US best sellers list:
1. Wii Play w/ remote
2. Mario Kart Wii w/ wheel
3. Wii Fit w/ balance board
4. Super Smash Bros. Brawl
5. Grand Theft Auto IV
6. Call of Duty: World at War
7. Gears of War 2
8. Grand Theft Auto IV
9. Madden NFL ’09
10. Mario Kart
Only three of the Japanese best sellers make it to the US list; furthermore, the Japanese list is much more dominated by Nintendo titles that is the US list. These differences can most likely be attributed to the different style of games that these two countries have. That may explain why the Xbox 360 isn’t fairing well at all in Japan, but is doing extremely well in the US. Either way, Nintendo still had five of the top ten best sellers in the US and nine of the top ten in Japan, so i’d say last year was a very good year indeed for Nintendo.
