Edge is reporting that Square Enix has signed a deal to bring Quantum of Solice to the Japanese market. The film, which was released last month in Japan, was a huge success in North America and Europe, but the game did not catch on. This news continues the trend of Japanese developers trying to create one seamless market for their games. Currently, most western developed games tank in the Asian markets and vice versa. Although this isn’t true for those certain AAA titles, the western titles need a foothold to further expand sales. Along the same lines, Square Enix would love to have a western developer to create games for them that go beyond just a strictly Asian market.
The bond games, especially recently, have not even sold well in the North American or European Markets, so this business decision confuses me. But, just like most movie games, development costs are so low that profits are made even with small sales data.
Square, come on, just open a western studio that develops games that are unilaterally popular in all markets. See Resident Evil or any other Capcom franchise, they know how to do it right. Of course it is much easier said than done. I hope to see you succeed in all markets in the future with titles other than Final Fantasy and all your new JRPG titles.
