Bioshock 2: Sea of Dreams is the latest in the game to incoporate a viral market campaign with the launch of the website somethinginthesea.com. 2K Marin just launched the website, which drops several hints about the game for the fans to interpret (much like any viral site.)
Going on the site loads up wrinkled world map. There is some radio static in the background with the occasional news report fading in and out. The map contains a three large X’s on the coast of Ireland, England, and Northern Europe with the dates 2/20/67, 3/15, and 3/16/67. These dates are all seven years after the events of the original game. There are also currently thre sets of pictures and newspaper clippings spread throughout the map.
The first set of documents contain a note from a Mr.Jeremiah Lynch regarding any information about some strange occurances, and that they should contact him. Next there is a picture of footprints in the sand compared to a regular shoe. The footprints are too small to be human and have a “strange toe shape”. The final document in this set is a newspaper clipping about said footprints, regarding how they are “metallic soles” with an “unusually long stride.”
The second set contains a picture of the Big Daddy doll that was originally seen in the teaser trailer. A newspaper clipping is also in this set with a story about a young girl being abducted by a man wearing a “mining helmet with a crimson light.” Finally, there’s another letter from Jeremiah Lynch. The third set, just released today, contains a picture of a crimson light underwater. There’s also a headline about how this red light is a hoax with the note “What ever it is, it’s take our children daughters. The final piece of information is a press release regarding the missing girls, and how they are all being abducted by people with red flashlights mounted to their heads. Somebody wrote on the release that “Victims all look similar. Why?”
The viral site ultimately brings more questions than answers. Who is Jeremiah Lynch? Is he a protagonist or antagonist? Do the little girls have something to do with Little Sisters? Are the Big Daddies the ones abducting them? We won’t all know for sure for awhile, but the site does seem to update rather regularly, so check somethinginthesea.com regularly as more information gets released.
