There was a lot to see on the expo floor this year, as it was littered with anything from game booths to credit card companies. Among all these interesting gadgets I ran across two such items that really made me stop and take a look. These two items were NeuroSky and NeuroFocus, both of which used “brain power” as a way of controlling the game. Now before you get the wrong impression, the brain was not used to power everything, in fact from the looks of it you were able to concentrate to activate a power.
In the case of NeuroSky, they were demoing a computer game that made use of mouse and keyboard, and their headset sensor. It controlled normally except to use a power the user would have to click on a power and highlight an item, then concentrate hard to activate it. A bar on the left side of the screen showed how much you were concentrating. It was pretty neat to see, and I can definitely see a future in this.
The other was NeuroFocus which used a much more complex setup. It had a cap with a bunch of sensors on it to measure brainwaves. The device was hooked up to a machine that read the electric force that the users brain would put out. It was then used, in the case of Grand Theft Auto 4, to accelerate the car. It seemed to go pretty smoothly, at least after the participant had some time to practice. I can’t wait to see where they go with this setup as well.
So if you ever dreamed of moving things with your mind then fear not, for the future shall deliver your dream come true.
