Tabula Rasa, the MMORPG created by Ultima Online creator Richard Garriot, has shut down the last of its servers after a massive battle. The game opened up in November of 2007 and had its fair share of problems promting in the removal of several of its servers. After Richard Garriot decided to leave the company, when he got back from his trip to space, the death knell was sounded. The game ran a little over a year and never really did take off.
This outcome isn’t all that rare considering most MMORPGs don’t usually attract many subscribers. Right now Age of Conan is struggling with the same problems that Tabula Rasa had, and it looks like it may be following in its footsteps. It takes a lot to make a successful game, let alone a successful massively multiplayer one. Although no MMORPG should really be compared to World of Warcraft, because as one developer stated, “it is an anomoly in the gaming world.” So next time you look at an MMORPG that is still alive an kicking think of just how hard it is to accomplish that task, and all the other games that failed to be able to make it work.
