Ordinarily when the mainstream media in this country wishes to report on video games at all, they do so only to inform us of supposed evils of a specific game. Mass Effect and GTA 4 are recent examples of the sensationalism first, facts second practice of most news networks, especially our friends at Fox News. So, I’m a little surprised that Six Days in Fallujah, a survival-horror shooter, hasn’t become a larger story. I had assumed that Bill O’Reilly would have been all over this story, but currently only Greta Van Susteren reported on the subject. The game, currently in development by Atomic Games, has drawn the ire of former and current soldiers and some of the families of those lost in the battle.
Peter Tamate, the president of Atomic Games, was quoted, “If this were a movie, a TV show, or a book, people wouldn’t question portraying the war in Iraq,” Tamte then continued. “So why wouldn’t that apply to a video game?”- Gamepro
The game’s publisher, Konami, has remained somewhat hushed, probably because they don’t know if the game is any good yet. However, Anthony Crouts, vice-president of marketing for Konami, did his best to be non-confrontational stating, “We’re not trying to make social commentary. We’re not pro-war. We’re not trying to make people feel uncomfortable. We just want to bring a compelling entertainment experience.”-The Wall Street Journal
This game will be controversial. And I suspect that, once the game nears actual release, it will make the network news rounds with a great deal of forced consternation. Hopefully the game will be good, because the only thing worse than a bad game is a buggy, boring game that people who don’t play video games won’t stop talking about.
