The UFC 2009 Undisputed proves to be a knockout…

Puns aside, UFC is easily one of the best and most complex sport fighting games. Pick-up and play, this game is not. Protip: Play the tutorial.

UFC 2009 Undisputed implements both standing and ground fighting very well. The demo features Chuck Liddel and Shogun Rua in an exhibition match consisting of three, three minute rounds. Punches and kicks are mapped to the face buttons, while the triggers and shoulder buttons are modifiers. Fans of EA’s Fight Night Round 3 should easily be able adapt to the controls.

UFC 2009 Undisputed is very realistic in the sense that any fighter can be knocked out at any time with just the right punch. Playing the demo, there were instances where I connected my first punch after dodging a flying knee for an immediate one hit KO. In another match, I was wailing on my opponent at the fence, but one stray punch allowed a wailing counter punch to knock me out.

Ground fighting can get very complex with transitions and guards, much like real UFC fights. The primary controls stay the same, while the right stick controls transitions and counters.

THQ has done to MMA what EA has done to boxing. As a huge fan of the Fight Night series, I am very excited to see THQ’s final product.
