If you have ever made it to an arcade in the last 20 years or gone onto Xbox Live Arcade you can see the popularity of dual stick shooters. One of those games that we have all played was Virtual On or Cyber Troopers Virtual On Oratorio Tangram (the long title, but for the sake of my word count, I will be referring to it as Virtual On). This game, originally, was a dual joystick battler. Now, you can use your Xbox controller to control the mechs you will be fighting with throughout the game. With over fifteen mechs and now in HD, the game holds up to the original cabinet, minus the awesome plastic seats, but you can make those if you want.
Playing through the arcade mode, it is still tough and would eat your quarters if not for the several continues I had to use. This is where some will be completely turned off, but for the true fans, the rage the game brings out of you will be enjoyable. The graphics are improved, but the move to HD hasn’t hurt or enhanced the overall gameplay. I would have wished the training mode was more than some videos of the controls in action because it is not every day I could go to my non-existent arcade and practice. This was the only major flaw from the single player action. Overall the single player is short, but still quite fulfilling. I believe if it was any longer, the game may have been drawn out or gotten boring. The replayability is also there because of the variety of robots from which you can choose.
The real reason you will download this game is the one on one multiplayer, which I was unable to play due to my lack of connections across my living room. You will see some impressions soon, but I am not going to review the online multiplayer. Call it a poor review, or even just a single player review, I don’t care. You all don’t read my opinion for the facts, you can about whether or not you should buy the damn game. I will say this, if you are a fan of the arcade game, then download this game. Some online multiplayer thrown in against some pros, if that is your gig, then this game is for you. Overall, the game is fun for fans, but for those looking for a great fighting game, Cyber Troopers Virtual On Oratorio Tangram is not for you.
If you would like to purchase the game, it is available on XBLA for 1200 MSPs or 15 bucks.
