Nowadays, there seems to be a need for sequels to games that were originally single player to have multiplayer this time around. Recent examples that come to mind are 2K’s Bioshock 2 and the subject of this post, Uncharted 2. The first Uncharted was definitely one of the best early Playstation 3 games available, receiving critical acclaim and adoration amongst the Playstation community. In order to add to their sequel’s replayability, Naughty Dog decided that online multiplayer was the best way to go. Uncharted 2 has both competitive and cooperative multiplayer modes, both of which earn you currency that can be combined with the money you earn in single player mode to purchase upgrades and additional content. The beta for these online modes was packed into early copies of inFAMOUS and began June 3rd.

The competitive modes were the first ones I got to try. A five versus five Team Deathmatch and one called Plunder, Naughty Dog’s variation of Capture the Flag, are the ones they have currently available to play. Matches seem pretty easy to find and I did not really experience any lag. Before each match you are able to give yourself Boosters, Uncharted 2′s version of perks, like Down the Irons (improved accuracy with long guns) or Keep Firing (more bullets in each clip). Nothing really stands out here that we haven’t seen before in most other competitive multiplayer modes, including the teenagers without jobs that were able to get themselves ranked up to level 20+ not too soon after the beta began. I found myself unloading many rounds into the opposing players, only to have them be just fine and able to kill me within a few shots. This could be because I suck at online competitive shooters on consoles, but after hearing complaints from teammates about the other team members taking advantage of glitches, it could be more than just that. Considering this game doesn’t even have an announced release date yet, I’m sure this issue will get resolved.

The part I am mainly interested in now after playing in this beta is the cooperative mode. One thing I was able to appreciate more here since I was not constantly getting killed by other players was how good this game looks. As you can probably tell from the screenshots, the character models, lighting and environmental details are very well done. In this mode, you and two other players go through part of a level from the adventure mode with objectives, like lifting overturned shelves to use as ladders to get to the next section of the map or hoisting eachother up to higher ground. If you are downed by the enemy (which seemed to happen a lot for me and the others), rather than dying right away, the screen goes grey and another player must help you up. The enemies in this portion of the beta took quite a few bullets to kill as well, seemingly an issue brought over from Drakes Fortune. Players have the ability to climb up some of the environment as well, though from what I played I was too busy ducking for cover and trying to stay alive to do much exploration.

Overall, Naughty Dog has succeeded in getting me excited to play at least part of the retail verison of Uncharted 2′s multiplayer. I could do without the generic feeling competitive multiplayer modes, but would love to continue playing through the co-op missions. Now I need to find the time to play through Uncharted again before this releases.
