This 80’s movie revival game is definitely worth picking up. With all the original cast doing the voice acting and Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis as writers, it’s basically like playing a 3rd Ghostbusters movie. Normally, games with too much background conversations annoy the hell out of me. But because it’s well-delivered and funny, it helps sell the characters.
You play as the new recruit. Instead of having a long training session, the game throws you right in the middle of things. Your 2 main items are your proton pack and PKE meter. As you gain money, you can upgrade both. The proton pack shoots a variety of streams, which can weaken, slow, grab, slime or blast your enemies. Slamming a ghost after weakening it is a very satisfying feeling, so I recommend getting the “Slam Dunk” upgrade so you can slam those ghosts straight into a trap, rather than wrestling with it. Slime tether is another fun stream that acts like a rope, so you can pull objects closer to you; or you can use it to temporarily restrain a ghost. Your PKE meter is used to reveal hidden ghosts, find out what their weaknesses are, find collectible artifacts or hidden doorways and sometimes quest items.
There is plenty of variety in both locations and enemies. You and the team will make a mess of the Sedgewick Hotel, New York Public Library, History Museum and a few undiscovered locations which I won’t spoil. You’ll see familiar faces like the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man, the Gray Lady and Slimer, but expect to be attacked by everything from opera singers, cultists, beauty queens and fishermen.
The controls are easy to pick up. You can choose whether or not to have the other Ghostbusters assist you in capturing ghosts. I left this function on, and still felt like there was enough ghostbusting left for me. If you get knocked out, as long as one of the team is around, they will revive you; which means you have to do the same for them. If all of the team gets incapacitated, you fail the mission.
My main gripe about this game was the audio. Normally I have no problems with surround sound in games, but ninety percent of the time I was unable to hear the dialogue because characters were either behind me, or too far away and I was forced to turn on subtitles. My other complaint is that if you have to redo a mission, you have to sit through all the talking again. I enjoyed it the first time, don’t force me to watch it over and over.
I tried one multiplayer match and found it to be fun enough to play again. The game I played was your typical “survive as many waves of ghosts as you can.” The only difference between gameplay from solo mode that I noticed, was that instead of having different unlimited streams readily available, they are treated as ammo, which spawns throughout the board.
This game is definitely worthy of the franchise name and a fun summer game to pick up.
