The creator of Super Mario and general video game mastermind Shigeru Miyamoto recently shared some thoughts on the difficulty level of the upcoming Super Mario Galaxy 2 – stating that while he does believe there will be lots of “appeal to the more veteran and the more experienced gamers,” he also wants to “create a game that accessible to new gamers as well,” while noting that “we believe that people who played through the first Mario Galaxy have become better players.”
These quotes lend some insight into the tightrope walk that Nintendo has to walk with every title they release. By now, they’ve no doubt noticed that while they’ve picked up a LOT of new, ‘casual’ gamers, some gamers from the ‘hardcore’ community have felt a bit abandoned by the company they once loyally stood by. You could argue about the realities of these two gamer categories, but at the very least it seems that Nintendo treats them as both separate and real.
The bottom line is I think games that appeal to all types of gamers across the board are rare, with games like Rock Band proving to be the exception more than the rule. Mario games definitely have the potential to be one of these rare titles. The original SMG had a pretty broad appeal, though at times I personally wished it was harder. Of course it’s a tricky balancing act to pull off. It looks like Nintendo is spending some time tweaking SMG2 to find that perfect sweet spot to appeal to what I’ve dubbed the “CasuCore.”
