In what is likely an attempt to have a bit of good news coming behind their corporate name after a disastrous bit of information was revealed earlier this week, Sony has revealed that their manufacturing costs for the PS3 are down “about 70 percent, roughly speaking.” This coming from corporate CEO Nobuyuki Oneda during a recent investor call.
Whether this means a PS3 price drop is imminent (as I’m sure we all would like – at least those of us who didn’t buy a PS3 in the past month) or, at the very least, Sony is finally making an actual profit on the machine is unclear. They were reportedly losting about $40 on each PS3 as recently as May, though we don’t know how much of the 70% has come since then.
