This morning Microsoft finally went ahead and confirmed what we all expected – in order to stay competitive and take a bit of the wind out of Sony’s sails from their price drop/slim announcement last week, as of tomorrow they are lowering the price of the top end 360 models: the Elite drops to $300, a direct match the now singular PS3 model, and the Pro drops to $250, that is, until the remaining units all sell out. The model is apparently no longer being produced, which strikes me as odd since, if anything, you’d think they’d push the essentially just-as-functional-but-now-once again-CHEAPER version of the 360 over the one that simple goes toe-to-toe with the PS3.

Ah well, I don’t work in marketing. The important thing here is competition remains good for us, the consumers. And honestly? Right now, with built in WiFi and the Blu-ray player on the PS3, Microsoft may have to start working a bit harder if they want to seem like the better choice.

One last detail: apparently the Elites are no longer coming packed with HDMI cables – one less reason to bother picking up the Elite over an Arcade model (still priced at $200) and a cheap/used hard drive.
