Over the past four years, since the launch of the Xbox 360, all next generation games have cost ten dollars more per title. The cost increase has been passed to the consumer by developers and publishers due to the fact that development costs have become much larger. Is this still true for AAA titles like Gears of War 2, Halo 3 and Metal Gear Solid 4, even though they sold over five million copies a piece. Was their profitability in jeopardy if they were sold at the fifty dollar price point instead of sixty? I do not believe so, but would that ten dollars have attracted more gamers? As the high price of gaming continues to grow, other systems are taking advantage of the creativity of weekend developers to keep the price of gaming lower. In the near future, we will see the price of “hardcore” games increase and the decrease cost of games in the mobile space.

One region that shows the validity of these claims is in the home of true gaming, Japan. In the highly competitive Japanese market, some very popular games could cost up to 15 or 20 dollars more than in the US, but they still sell very well because of the trendy nature. One of the more recent examples is Resident Evil 5, or Biohazard 5 (the franchise name in Japan), which was sold at a price comparable to 75 US dollars. Did this high price cause the game to fail, hell no, and Capcom generating a ton of more profit on top of the normally small margins on a 60 dollar game. Could this have been a retailer mark up, I do not know because we do not have access to the wholesale prices or cost. Soon, as network infrastructure grows in speed and abundance, we will see a similar rise in the cost of downloadable titles, especially on next gen consoles.

Do not get me wrong; Xbox Live and the Playstation Network have revolutionized gaming in the online space, opening up multiplayer and downloadable content for our consumption. But, the trend of charging for their services and increase in overall cost of the games is a very troubling . These rising costs are not just hurting gamers, but developers, who see a drop off of downloads due to the current economic situation, therefore, a lower profit margin. Seeing these tendencies will also deter major publishers/license holders from taking the leap into the DLC market, keeping the overall value of a game lower. In turn, we could see more trading of games and piracy because as consumers, we need to get the “bang for our buck.” Although, the enthusiast press and hardcore gamers resent these practices, the “main stream” gamer is always ready to trade in their games not knowing the consequences of their actions against the developers and publishers who create these games.

The antithesis of this higher price of gaming is the iPhone. Utilizing the App Store, gamers and developers have been able to strike a balance on prices. With all games costing under ten bucks and the majority under 3 dollars, who can blame small developers for moving to an Apple platform because of ease of use and 20 plus million install base. Even some Apps are free, which is the mecca of toilet gaming. I believe that this is the future of mobile gaming and Nintendo/Sony will have to recognize the quality of such a platform. As for future iPhone iterations and releases, no one will know how many of these devices will be in the hands of gamers within the next five years.

The price of gaming is growing and decreasing as the popularity of several platforms grows. We shall see how the digital distribution market adapts to the need for lower cost games. Without the necessity of stamping media and packaging, what will games publishers do? Increase their own capital to spend on more ambitious games or line their pockets at the expense of the consumer. No one really knows and no analyst can give us the answer, but until that time we can only speculate. Given the current economic climate, it isn’t preposterous that an all-digital platform will be on its way, but the power of the retailers will dictate the truth. As long as the majority of games are sold through retailers we will continue to see physical media. It is my hope that this trend will cease to exist and we can go to an all digital distribution system for all games.

Electronic Arts has let the press know what games they are going to be showing at E3 this year. It is a cavalcade of great titles, including Brutal Legend, Army of Two: The 40th Day, Dragon Age, Dead Space Extinction and more. Their massive lineup is what we expect from the second largest publisher of video games in the United States. I am excited for almost all of these titles and you should be too because they are awesome. Great games from some AAA developers like Bioware, Double Fine, DICE and Pandemic Studios. Personally, this lineup is one of the strongest from all the publishers attending E3 and should help EA get out of their massive loss they reported last quarter. Here is to much success this fall with some amazing titles, for which, many of us will be purchasing and playing.

Here is the full press release for all the games in their lineup:

Arguably one of the founding fathers of video games is officially keynoting the LA Games Conference. Nolan Bushnell has been quiet on the front of video games for sometime now but The LAGC will herald at least a short return to the spotlight for the man. He will be offering his opinion on the current generation of consoles and just generally where he thinks the industry as a whole is headed. Part of me cannot help but wonder if he will provide free Chuckie Cheese pizza for the keynote. While that may only be a dream, I can still hope….

Mr. Bushnell is not the only one big dog to be delivering a keynote at LAGC, additional speakers will include PopCap front man David Roberts, Benchmark Capitol partner Mitch Lasky, and Qualcomm exec Mike Yuen.

Times like these that I wish I wasn’t a poor college kid on the East Coast, it’s going to be a good one this year folks!

Along time ago, in febuary, Electronic Arts acquired the Bourne license from the Robert Ludlum’s Estate. They have now contracted Starbreeze, makers of many awesome games recently, including The Chronicles of Riddick, to develop the game. The last Bourne game was very good, but it was way too short (around 3 hours for a sixty dollar game). I think that this game has huge potential and the Bourne series is pretty much a household name these days. As long as it is not rushed and not tied to a movie (unfortunately I think it will be) it will be great. Stay tuned to AmpedGaming for more information as we get it from Starbreeze or Electronic Arts.

It doesn’t matter whether this game is good or bad, new and fresh or old and repetitive, you will be buying it anyways. Now you know what day it comes out and go out to pre-order it at your local electronics store. By the way, I imagine this will be coming out on every console released even the PS2, sorry Xbox 1.0. More news coming soon and hopefully a new demo.

Neil Young, no not that one, this one, started a small iPhone developer, ngmoco, thinking he could make some cash. Ten million dollars of investments later, I think the guy is onto something. With super popular releases like Topple and Rolando, the small developer has gotten a ton of press and fame for fun, innovative games. I personally have played many of their releases like Dr. Awesome (see our review) along with Wordfu and Rolando, which are all innovative, fun and cheap games. I am glad to see their dedication to the player is paying off in a huge way. Congratulations to Neil and the guys/gals of ngmoco, these investments are well deserved. Now that there are over 6,000 games on the app store, it will take companies like this to get the good games to stand out. Keep up the good work!

The Sega rep’s e-mail states:

“Sega of America has grown at pace with the booming videogame industry, but at this time of economic recession, harsh retail landscape, and the reality of business challenges to profitability, we must take steps to reduce our cost structure and ensure long-term success.”

Hopefully they shift focus from attempting to breathe life back into a dying franchise (*cough Sonic cough*) to spawning better ones.
