So the last Tournament was a resounding success! Our Champion rose above the rest to claim his prize in Street Fighter 4 and now that the smoke has cleared the staff here at Amped is thinking about the next tournament already. However, a game cannot be decided upon. Should we do Street Fighter 4 again, should we do a tournament for the PS3 this time? Should we do a Halo 3 Tournament since the Multiplayer for that game has recently been revitalized with the release of ODST?

Well the logical explanation here is to ask those of you who would be participating in this tournament. What game do you want? What system? What rules? I encourage you to leave as many comments as you feel necessary, if you see an idea leave a comment on how you support it. We can’t commit to something that won’t follow through because of lack of players so please be involved here! This tournament will most likely be decided by you guys if there is enough conversation on this post so get to it!

This is an interesting bit of news. According to formerly television-centric ratings maker Nielson, and their new video game ratings system, the Xbox 360 has become the first console to beat the PS2 in terms overall minutes played per month. The Wii is not too far behind, and the Ps3 is lagging a ways below.

Although they are “neck and neck” in terms in actual numbers, logic dictates that over time the 360 will permanently overtake the system, with the 360 already showing the highest percentage of active users over the last 6 months.

Interestingly enough, the Wii has the least active users apparently, with their numbers showing up waayyy below all other systems, including the GameCube!

Check out the link below for all the crunched numbers. Fun stuff for stat fiends such as yours truly. Try bringing some of this stuff up at your next dinner party. Trust me, people will be talking about it afterward. Or else, about you. Either way’s fine…

Patrick Kane, a Chicago Blackhawk, has been chosen for the cover athlete for EA’s NHL 10. The game that is basically the testing ground for most EA sports games has given the honor of cover athlete to an american, finally. Don’t get me wrong, I am not a American conservative, but I am glad to hear it. Bring a sport, for which the majority of copies are sold, to us. Thanks again EA.

Chicago Blackhawks Star Patrick Kane the New Face of EA Sports NHL10

REDWOOD CITY, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: ERTS) today revealed that 20-year-old scoring phenom Patrick Kane of the Chicago Blackhawks will be the new face of the NHL® 10 videogame from EA SPORTS™. Kane is the youngest player ever chosen for the cover of the NHL franchise and his image will be on the front of all packaging when NHL 10 is available in North American retail stores this September.

Having emerged as one of the most skilled players in the NHL in just two seasons, Kane won the Calder Trophy as Rookie of the Year in 2008 and this year led the Blackhawks to the Western Conference Finals. He has scored more than 20 goals and registered more than 70 points in each of his first two seasons.

“It’s exciting to be on the cover of my favorite videogame after playing just my second year as a professional,” said Kane. “When you look back at some of the great players who have had this opportunity, it’s an honor to be a part of the EA SPORTS family and contribute to a game I’ve been playing for more than 10 years.”

EA SPORTS also announced that it has signed Canadian junior hockey scoring sensation John Tavares, expected to be the top pick in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, to promote the release of NHL 10. Tavares will join Kane, the first overall draft pick in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft, as spokespersons for NHL 10.

“It’s exciting for me to team up with Patrick to promote EA SPORTS and get the chance to play NHL 10 before it’s in stores,” said Tavares. “Now I’m looking forward to the draft and finding out which team will select me.”

“At EA SPORTS we believe in identifying the most talented up-and-coming athletes in the world to help us develop the most authentic sports games,” said Jordan Edelstein, Vice-President of Marketing for EA SPORTS. “We believe Kane is one of the next great American hockey stars and Tavares will have an immediate impact in the league.”

Washington Capitals center Nicklas Backstrom was earlier named a cover athlete on NHL 10 packaging in Sweden. Additional regional cover athletes for Finland, Denmark and Switzerland will be named at a later date. NHL 10 will be in retail stores across Europe on September 18.

A native of Buffalo, NY, Kane is just the second American-born player to be featured on the cover of the top-selling* EA SPORTS hockey videogame franchise. New York Rangers goaltender John Vanbiesbrouck was the first when he was featured on the cover of NHL 97.

The EA SPORTS NHL® franchise has won 19 Sports Game of the Year awards over the past two years and this month named by Gamespot.com as the Best Sports Game of E3. This year the NHL 10 franchise begins a new era with gameplay innovations that deliver all-new board play, first-person fighting and over 200 gameplay refinements that replicate the skill and finesse of NHL hockey.

Box art and screenshots of Patrick Kane are available at http://info.ea.com. For more info please visit http://beta.easports.com/

NHL 10 will be available for the PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system and Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system with an MSRP of $59.99. It is developed by EA Canada in Burnaby, B.C. The game is rated E10+.

This month was definitely a very slow one, in terms of games, so most of the consoles did terrible. The place where I am most surprised and happy is the sales for UFC: Undisputed 2009. Finally, THQ has a hit on their hands and maybe, just maybe, they can make a profit this quarter. Congrats to those folks because they needed this one, BAD! Can’t wait to see next months sales on all of these titles, but the consoles will show the results of this years E3 Expo.

PS – Poor Punchout!!! – I guess their weren’t enough games with Wii’s with the nostalgia factor you fed. Better luck next time.

Electronic Arts has let the press know what games they are going to be showing at E3 this year. It is a cavalcade of great titles, including Brutal Legend, Army of Two: The 40th Day, Dragon Age, Dead Space Extinction and more. Their massive lineup is what we expect from the second largest publisher of video games in the United States. I am excited for almost all of these titles and you should be too because they are awesome. Great games from some AAA developers like Bioware, Double Fine, DICE and Pandemic Studios. Personally, this lineup is one of the strongest from all the publishers attending E3 and should help EA get out of their massive loss they reported last quarter. Here is to much success this fall with some amazing titles, for which, many of us will be purchasing and playing.

Here is the full press release for all the games in their lineup:

EA Spotlights Blockbuster Titles at E3

E3 Titles Showcase Quality, Innovation, Online Experiences and Focus on the Wii
E3 Expo 2009

REDWOOD CITY, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: ERTS) today revealed the games it will present at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) at the Los Angeles Convention Center (LACC) June 2 – 4. The year’s lineup features blockbuster franchises, new intellectual property as well as ten titles for the Wii.

“This year at E3, we have an incredible slate of games for the Nintendo Wii, PS3, Xbox 360, PC, Mac and mobile devices,” said EA’s CEO John Riccitiello. “Our creative teams are developing some of the most innovative experiences on any platform. We couldn’t be more proud of the games we’re presenting this year.”

EA will kick off E3 with a press briefing hosted by John Riccitiello to highlight many of the company’s creative leaders and top titles from EA. For all the latest information on EA’s games, plus photos, videos, and interviews from the EA booth during E3 2009, visit www.ea.com/e3

Titles which will be previewed in EA’s booth (#1501) at the Los Angeles Convention Center include:

ARMY OF TWO™: THE 40th DAY

The ultimate two-man private military team of Salem and Rios return in ARMY OF TWO: THE 40th DAY, where they must fight to survive a carefully orchestrated series of catastrophes that are dragging the city of Shanghai to the brink of disaster. The game has been built from the ground up with a focus on an incredible cooperative experience. A bigger playbook of features and a new arsenal of co-op moves are available to both players to perform at any time, opening up fresh strategies and choices. The result is a bigger, deeper, more organic and immersive co-op experience that lets players put their best two-man tactics to use whenever and wherever they want.

* Platforms – Xbox 360®, PLAYSTATION®3 and PSP®
* Ship Date – Winter

We all have favorite games that may be getting on in age or may even be relatively new. However, I think very few of us wouldn’t like to see a sequel of these games if not even for our own enjoyment. So here is a list of the top 5 games I wish would continue.

5. Chrome Hounds: I know that it isn’t that old of a game, but in my opinion they were onto something. I have always been a fan of the customizable mecha fighting games. However, where Chrome Hounds caught my attention was with its inclusion of tactical squad based combat where you fufill different roles. Creating your own squads for you and your friends can be fun as well. I know I always loved raining destruction on people in my heavy gunner hound standing next to the commander who spooted enemies for me, all the while knowing that even with the two soldiers and the scout hunting down the enemy in the field that I was safe with our defender keeping watch on our backs. That’s just an example of the tactical combat allowed. Even better is the online mode allows you to play other people in squad based combat but also effecting the outcome of a war online between three nations that occurs over a month and then resets at the next month. More hound roles, more nations and expanded gameplay is good enough for a sequel to me…

4. The Shenmue Franchise: I loved the storytelling of these games, it was fantastic how you experienced everything on Ryu’s quest to avenge the murder of his father. The second game left a lot to be explored in the plot and I know many a fanboy who is still disappointed by the game being incomplete.

3.Crackdown: I know there are still rumors flying around that this game may still receive the sequel treatment but I want to express it anyway. I know many people bought this game at first for the inclusion of the Halo 3 multiplayer beta with it, that being said I think many people were very pleasantly surprised with the game inside. While short on plot, there’s something just great about throwing cars at people 100 yards away. I hope this sequal sees the light of day someday cuz I know I would buy it in a heartbeat.

2. Super Smash Brothers Melee: This is where some of you esteemed readers may become a little confused. I know that Brawl exists, I however do not think it has anything to do with the smash brother’s franchise. Too many characters were changed in ways that turned off many of the devoted followers of Melee. That being said brawl is a much slower game then Melee, however, this is not a critique of brawl so we’ll speak as if it doesn’t exist. Whoever first came up with the idea to pit all of Nintendo’s superstars against each other is a true genius. It worked in the first game and again in Melee. A few more characters could be included but even then I don’t think the gameplay should be messed with much, just an update to the newest generation of systems.

1. Jet Set Radio Future: I have always been such a huge fan of this game. Nothing to do with my usual tendencies but more to do with up until that point I had never played anything like JSRF. I walked into it expecting a skating game like the others I had played before. The last thing I expected was a plot and innovative gameplay that focused more around races and spraying graffiti then doing tricks. In fact the tricks serve no more purpose than to keep you moving quickly. The cell shaded graphics back then made it flashier and prettier than most games out at the beginning of the Xbox’s career. Then there was the soundtrack from it which fit the weird plot of the game as well as it’s Japanese punk style perfectly. I know rumors of Jet Set Radio Next have been around for years but I hold little hope at this point..

Toilets like burning barrels or smashable wooden crates pop as standard in lots of videogames. Here are my top five ways to use the porclein altar.

5. Day of the Tentacle: The toilets are actually called Chrono-johns and are used to transport characters and items need to thwart the threat of the Purple Tentacle. All we need now is Doc Brown in his garbage powered delorean.

4. The Sims Series: Available in a number of tasteful styles, the commode plays a serious part in the survival of your sims, or the annoyance of your sim’s spouse who has to clean up the mess after a blockage when you fell asleep eating pizza on the front porch. So much like real life, it’s eery.

3. Hitman Franchise: In true Hollywood fashion, the shiny domed genetically engineered assassin shows his true prowess by following conveniently full bladdered Workers, Security Guards, Mafiosos and Henchmen into the mens bathroom and incapacitating them to acquire their uniforms as disguises and dragging their unconscious or dead bodies in the nearest cubicle and leaving their heads soaking in the bowl. If that’s not a distinguishable M.O. I don’t know what is.

2. Duke Nukem 3D: The star of the 90s classic as well as the missing but presumed dead title in eternal development, Duke Nukem Forever, has lots of witty one liners, but none are as thorough or to the point as when you stop the bathroom of a strip club and relieve yourself. Classy.

1. Half Life 2: Despite all the intellect and engineering abilities of Gordon Freeman, nothing seems to amuse this Scientist Superhero than to use the Zero-Point Energy Field Manipulator with a snazzy kohl’s bowl and turn it into a potty launcher to slay Combine soldiers with a well placed ‘Head’ shot.

There you the top five toilets to play with when you’re not playing videogames on the john.

We all know that fewer games and even fewer good ones come out during the summer months. So in order to help all you gamers survive this deadly drought I’ll give you a list of 10 games that might keep you busy for the summer months.

10. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare: The majority of you reading this article are probably already playing this, a few may even be ticked off that it debuts at the bottom of the list. Well, that’s mainly because compared to World at War it pales in replayability. The campaign isn’t co-op, the multiplayer isn’t as developed, and most importantly, there are no zombies in it. Granted the multiplayer action is still fantastic and the only reason it isn’t to the caliber of World at War is because World at War’s multiplayer is the polished version of Modern Warfare’s. Still I oppose the lack of Nazi Zombies in Modern Warfare.

9. Assasin’s Creed:If you haven’t played this game by now then I will be downright surprised. However, if you have not then this game will easily cure your boredom for a while. The unique plot and gameplay elements of this game make it arguably one of the best games to come out onto any system so far this console generation. So if you think its hot this summer then maybe a trip to the deserts of the middle east in the time of the Templar Knights will give you an idea of just how good you have it.

8. Mass Effect: This game will keep you involved simply because of how convincing the world that was created in this game really is. It’s a rare thing that you come across a game world so oringinal. Everytime I play it again I just marvel at much storyboard work was done and how close the collaboration between the writers and the deveelopers must have been to accomplish the creation of a game as good as Mass Effect. You’ll enjoy every last second of this gem of a game.

7. Dawn of War: Soulstorm: I have yet had the pleasure of playing DoW 2 so it is with my current knowledge that I say that my all-time favourite RTS PC game is right here. It may help that I have a certain love for GamesWorkshops Warhammer 40k bu that aside there is a reason that this franchise won RTS game of the year. Every race in this game (and there are 9 of them) play so completely unique that you actually have to take the time of learning how to play as them if you want to have any hope of competance. For fans of 40k, you’ll be delighted at how true to the canon it is. I promise you that you’ll get hours of enjoyment out of this game.

6. Jet Set Radio Future: This is the only game on this list that hasn’t come out in the past 2 years. That itself should give you an idea of why it’s on here. JSRF is simply just that good, sequal to Jet Grind Radio it continues the tradition of a funky cell shaded tokyo coupled with the youthful misfits and their music make for a uniquley fun and original expierance. The characters get around on their rollerblades but do not mistake this for a skating game based on pulling off tricks. In fact the tricks are simply a way of keeping you going while grinding and consists of simply pushing X or Y. No, this game follows a turf war signified by the spraying of graffiti, and the plot that takes place over the course of the game is uniquely punk in a way you don’t often find in games.

5. Left 4 Dead: What can I say about any game that Valve has made other than that you should play it? Nothing, and that extends to Left 4 Dead in every single way. The 4 player co-op zombie kill fest of this game is just satisfying in every way possible. To make things better for fans of Valves games, the usual humor is just as present as ever if a little darker than usual. I know the description fo Left 4 Dead is a little short but thats because aall I can say is that you have to play this game!

4. Call of Duty: World at War: It’s Call of Duty improved in almost every fashion. I know it got hit by many critics for returning to the Great War but the gameplay elements are better than ever before. My favourite part however, and why it ranks so high on this list is the zombies. These zombies are also Nazis, which makes them that much better in my eyes. I feel like part of me became complete when I heard that a survival mini game involving Nazi Zombies was to be included in the game. On top of that it introducesa uniquely CoD co-op that’ll make your friends just as happy when they play with you.

3. Gears of War 2: A gun with a chainsaw is already hard to beat, but in the spirit of co-operative multiplayer that has been pretty present on this list I cannot and will not forget Horde Mode. It is one of the things that had people most excited for this game and I count myself among those crowds. I have reached wave 50 so many times with friends and have yet to get bored with it. Never has two and a half minutes felt as long as it did in wave 49 as 3 maulers advanced on my defensive position with the covering fire of a grinder.

2. Fallout 3: Bethesda is another developer that just never seems to disappoint. Fallout 3 is no exception to this trend, with you surviving in a post apocalyptic Washington DC. The introduction of moral choices give you a lot of leeway with what you want to do and effects the outcome of the game. The recent hash of DLC has only kept the joy alive longer.

1. Mirrors Edge: This in my opinion is the most underrated game of 2008. I cannot count the times that I have played through it, its just pure enjoyment. The free running gameplay and the combat almost making it not worth it to use weapons is just so refreshing I keep finding myself returning to this game for one more run. You’ll find yourself becoming a ridiculous perfectionist in the time trials. I think the reviews were too harsh and far off in describing Mirrors Edge. I thinnk you’ll find a lot of simple enjoyment in this game and I have no doubt about it deserving the number one spot on this list.

Well with this list I might dare to say that you’ll be prepared for a nice leisurely summer of visiting the hits you may have missed during the holiday season. What better way to catch up for the coming holiday season.
